HRLHA Press Release No 6 July 2010

Powering Burning Fire with Fuel

It is obvious that the Horn of Africa is one of the most unstable and volatile regions in the world. The statelessness of Somalia since 1991 is the main source of instability in the region. Somalia’s problems range from the war among War-lords to control the split parts of the country, resulting in massive humanitarian crises such as famines that has endangered the lives of millions, massive refugee flows to neighboring countries, and human rights violations, all of which have lasted for more than eighteen years..

The failure of the regional and international bodies to control Somalia’s chaos has become a contaminative and communicable problem, creating serious social, economic, political and stability concerns in all neighboring states, by giving rise to widespread lawlessness. The twin explosion attack against hundreds of defenseless ordinary citizens by the Somalia Militant group known as Al Shabab, as claimed by the group itself, in Uganda/Kampala on July 11, 2010, which killed more than 76 civilians was one of the indications that the crises in Somalia is already impacting on the peace and stability of the neighboring Horn of African countries.

The leader of Somali militant group, Mr. Abu Zubayr, who claimed the responsibility for this two grenade attacks in Uganda/Kampala on 11July 2010 on behalf of the militant group, has openly issued a threat (in his audio message played on Mogadishu radio station on  July 15, 2010) that further similar attacks could be committed in Uganda and Burundi.

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa strongly condemns the indiscriminate and violent acts of the militant group Al Shabab against innocent people in Uganda on July 11, 2010 in which 76 people died. HRLHA also strongly opposes to the threats and the intended further attacks by Al Shabab; and requests the leaders of the group to refrain from such indiscriminate and violent acts that victimizes innocent and defenseless people, regardless of where and when the attacks were intended to happen.

Besides, HRLHA calls on regional and international agencies to uniformly stand against such deadly attacks.

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa/HRLHA is a non-political organization which attempts to challenge abuses of human rights of the peoples of various nations and nationalities in the Horn of Africa. HRLHA is aimed at defending fundamental human rights including freedoms of thought, expression, movement and organization. It is also aimed at raising the awareness of individuals about their own basic human rights and that of others. It has intended to work on the observances as well as due processes of law. It promotes the growth and development of free and vigorous civil societies.
