A Message From the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

Human Rights Day 2010: defending against discrimination

Dear All,

On Human Rights Day, 10 December, 2010 the focus will be on human rights defenders who act to end discrimination.

The UN Human Rights office will pay tribute to human rights champions who in their daily lives find ways to ensure that their fellow human beings are not discriminated against. The High Commissioner will encourage defenders everywhere to share what they do to fight all kinds of discrimination so that more people can learn how to become defenders.

Civil society organisations and communities may want to highlight the efforts of their local, everyday human rights defenders at Human Rights Day events. High profile defenders could use the opportunity to share their inspirational experiences.

The topic reaffirms that we all have a role to play in defending against discrimination, and, more broadly, in ensuring respect for human rights. Every one of us can make a difference.

We encourage you to continue the focus on the importance of defending against discrimination throughout 2011.

We will shortly provide you with a slogan and visual identity that you can use for events, banners, websites, t-shirts, posters and so on. Information notes on defenders and discrimination will follow.

With your support the year-long focus on human rights defenders who act to end discrimination, will make a difference and will inspire others to take up the challenge.
