A Grave Human Rights Violation in Ethiopia

Extrajudicial killings is Arbitrary Depriving of Rights to Life

October 11, 2020

The HRLHA is strictly condemning that the Oromia Special Police brutally shot a live bullet on peaceful protesters on October 11, 2020  at Robe town, Bale zone. Several protesters have sustained fatal injuries and one killed according to HRLHA’s source. The photograph posted below is AWOL ABDURRO, the one mercilessly killed by a live bullet shot from police. AWOL was a resident of Robe town and allegedly a 19 years old Qeerroo.

Protestors against Prosperity Party, (the Ruling Party) are being hunted down everywhere for expressing their grievance peacefully. This obviously signifies that a fully fledged military dictatorship led by martial law has already been put in place in the country. Hundreds of innocent and peaceful protesters have been killed by police since Artist Hachalu’s assassination. The right to peaceful demonstration/protest is one of the fundamental human rights guaranteed under the FDRE Constitution and international human rights treaties ratified by Ethiopia. However, these days than ever before, transgressions of human rights and freedoms including ‘freedom to protest’ and expression have become rampant in Ethiopia specifically in Oromia.

The government of Ethiopia must refrain from such henhouse actions and respect.  as stipulated in Ethiopia constitution 1995 under article 30, “The Right of Assembly, Demonstration and Petition” that explains everyone should have the freedom to take part in protests without discrimination on any grounds.
